iFunny, Reddit, The Chive. The list of meme focused sites goes on and on showing just how much memes have become a powerful force in social media. Whether used to relate to life situations or political agenda pushing, memes have solidified their place in pop culture through their assorted uses but, like a majority of fields, it is a male dominated field, with most successful meme creators being men. This also leads to a group of meme creators have been called out for their misogynistic content. If we take a trip back down to what memes were originally made for, they were made to be humor. Humor has no gender. Thus creating content shouldn’t revolve around any type of hateful system. There is a certain type of courtesy that exists in these communities that makes it so that typically hateful creators are shut out. This does not always stop all of them. As a public outlet and being covered under freedom of speech, no legal action can come into play here (of course unless it covers illegal forms of speech). Nor should it need to. As the human community, it’s just going to happen, people can be awful. Uneducated people, make uneducated decisions. The best thing we can do as a community is continue creating positive content that supports what these communities are actually meant to be. Humor for the masses.
