Little Mix

by Serena H.

Little Mix is a british girl group comprised of 4 members: Jade, Perrie, Jesy, and Leigh-Anne. The group was formed on X-Factor UK and they continued through the competition, eventually winning. They have gone on to release 5 albums, the most recent being released this past month. In previous albums, Little Mix has sent an array of messages including body positivity with “We Are Who We Are” on their 1st album DNA, relationships with “Shoutout to my Ex” on Glory Days and just general dance songs like “Move” on Salute. Little Mix has never shied away from speaking their minds whether it be in interviews or their music. They support good self-image and female power. Despite their mixed messages with relationships with some songs like “Black Magic,” their message has only been reaffirmed with their newest album.

LM5 has a variety of songs and sounds but is unified in main message of female empowerment through embracing your uniqueness and being comfortable with who you are, which is seen specifically in their song “Strip” featuring Sharaya J. They also again touch on relationships with songs like “Monster in Me” and “Think About Us”.  A song to highlight is “Woman’s World,” that has lyrics talking about differences in experiences for women in society. It confronts the issues of the focus on women’s appearances and social expectations rather than their work ethic, intellect or other capabilities. With artists like Little Mix moving toward songs about social issues and standing for women’s rights to feel comfortable in their own skin, there's hope for change in society moving forward. Lyrics like theirs present opportunities for conversation on hard, and often overlooked topics about women, relationships and body image. With that in mind, they stand as feminists somewhat in the background but worth recognition for getting their true voices heard.
